Jewish Federation of Greater El Paso Encourages Volunteers on Mitzvah

With more than two decades of experience working for governmental and nonprofit organizations, Esther Burnham (formerly Esther Furrer) works as a grants writer for Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. Previously she spent twelve years employed at the El Paso Education Initiative, Inc., where she last worked as assistant superintendent of finance. While in El Paso, Esther Burnham supported several local organizations, including the Jewish Federation of Greater El Paso (JFGEP).

Seeking to connect local Jewish people with those living in Israel, the JFGEP also helps to sustain and improve the lives of Jews across the globe. Established almost 80 years ago, the Federation allocates grants to nearby organizations that benefit the community.

On April 10, 2016, the JFGEP celebrated a Federation Community-Wide Mitzvah Day. This global initiative for volunteerism included four different projects for volunteers to choose from that have an ongoing need for help.

* El Paso Villa Maria, a temporary home for the homeless, uses volunteers to prepare and serve lunch.

* Frontera Land Alliance encourages volunteers to spend two hours to clean a segment of Resler Canyon.

* Habitat for Humanity has the volunteers assist with ongoing projects. They may help with painting, roofing, or framing walls.

* Jardin de los Milagros, a local farm that gives vegetables and fruits to food pantries and needy families, uses the volunteers to help plant vegetable seeds for its harvest later in the year.
