Esther Burnham (formerly Esther Furrer) of El Paso, Texas, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of arts in economics. A grant researcher and writer for Austin Community College, Esther Burnham enjoys traveling in her free time and has visited various parts of the United States. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of her favorite travel destinations.
In existence for more than 400 years, Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the United States. With 300 days of sunshine per year, the city attracts more than 1 million visitors annually. It is a center for arts and culture, with the third largest art market in the country featuring more than 300 galleries and dealers.
The International Folk Art Market is one of many annual events held in the city. Since its first staging in 2004, the market has featured more than 750 artists from 92 countries. It is the largest exhibition and sale of folk art works in the world, and the event contributes an estimated $11 million to the local economy. Due to its success, Santa Fe became the first city in the United States designated as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
This year's International Folk Art Market takes places July 8-10, 2016.
